Role of Logistics in Construction Industry

February 1, 2021

The construction business in India holds a paramount position. The real estate developers are always on a roll erecting new skyscrapers in different cities across the globe. It is all a reality today, thanks to the tremendous support by logistics and transportation industry. The role of an effective transportation and logistics system is vital to ensure timely delivery of the right materials to your construction site, while reducing your overall costs. This blog will speak in length about the role of transportation and logistics in construction business.

According to a recent report by KPMG, the construction industry in India is the second largest employer after agriculture, and it is therefore critical to the country’s economic stability. With an industry size of INR 10.5 trillion, it accounts for around 8% of the nation’s GDP and employs close to 57.5 million people.

As per the industry body, when the pandemic struck, there were close to 20,000 ongoing construction projects Pan India. The fear of infection kept the workers’ attendance at less than 70%. These projects engaged a workforce of around 8.5 million only in construction work. Some of these projects were delayed while others got cancelled. Besides, there were supply chain bottlenecks that resulted in reduced or no supply of equipment and materials including structural steel and glass from Asia.

To deal with the impact of COVID-19, the Finance Minister announced some relief measures. The state governments are directed to use `31,000 crore welfare fund towards helping labourers in the construction industry.

An additional investment of INR 337.5 trillion will be required in the infrastructure by 2030 to sustain economic growth at current level.

Here are a few tips that can help you plan the transportation & logistics for your construction business.

COMMUNICATION

First and the most important part of any business is crystal clear communication. When you communicate your plan of action for moving certain construction materials, the communication should address all the parameters to everyone who are an integral part of the process including your key manufacturers, suppliers, vendors and distributors. Keeping everyone properly informed is the crucial aspect of communication that can help move things faster (pun, intended).

DEVELOP A PLAN OF ACTION

When you are clear about what you want to communicate to concerned personnel, you need to strategize and develop a plan of action to create seamless logistic process.

COORDINATE WITH THE DESIGN TEAM

When you are done planning and allocating the action plans to all key manufacturers and contractors, the next logical step is to sit with the team of design professionals and map the flow of materials. This helps minimize the holding time of important materials required at the site, and improve efficiency.

IDENTIFY THE BARRIERS

One way to ensure that the materials are reaching the site promptly is to understand the tariff and non-tariff trade barriers. Some of the crucial barriers, such as import licensing, anti-dumping and countervailing measures, procurements, and so on, can impede the smooth flow of construction materials.

EMPLOY A LOGISTICS CENTRE

Employing a logistics centre can be advantageous in various ways such as storage of raw materials, transportation on-demand, distribution, cargo consolidation, sorting, eCommerce, and package tracking. Mainly, having a logistics centre helps in demand and supply of resources that can be a challenge in times of uncertainty.
