Lighting your home for good health & wellbeing

May 06, 2021

During this pandemic when most of the people are staying inside their homes, it is perhaps imperative to stay healthy and stay protected. The first step, however, begins by letting natural light enter your home. It gives you a sense of freedom that you are not locked up in a solitary prison. The presence of natural light is also a sign that your home follows proper Vastu and respects the space.

Also, a home that doesn’t allow natural light to enter inside has more polluted air than the outdoors, meaning – the Air Quality Index inside your home is compromised. So, what can you do to improve the lighting inside your home and stay healthy? Read on already!

First things first – NATURAL LIGHT

Natural lighting is not only healthy, but it is quite an efficient way to save money and energy. Natural light brightens up space and gives you the required boost of Vitamin D every day without stepping out or gulping a handful of multivitamin capsules.

Also, natural light is a stress buster and it releases loads of endorphins (commonly known as feel-good hormones) which naturally makes you feel happy (pun, intended). Is that all? Nope! Apart from lighting up the room and your face with a smile, natural light allows you to focus and improve your vision.

Well, these are all the health benefits when you are staying inside. What if you aren’t home? A study done by Building Technology Innovation suggested that a home that had natural light got more rentals, and people were willing to pay more which eventually appreciated the value of the home.

The Smarter way – SMART LIGHTING

Apart from the various health benefits of natural lights, one of them says that it also makes you smart. According to research, students who studied under natural daylight exhibited better mental function of memory recall as compared to students who didn’t have natural daylight. This brings us to the darker side of the lighting aspect. What do we do when there’s no chance of natural light entering the home? Smart lighting is the only answer? Well, not really! Smart lighting is just one way to manage the lighting in your home according to your mood.

When the whole world seems to be working from home, it is better to sync every device in your home with your phone so that regardless of which room you are working from, the control of the entire home is at your fingertips.

BETTER LIGHTING = Better health & wellbeing

There are various other ways to improve the lighting in your home and not just with the help of natural or smart lighting. Here’s how –

  • Ensure that you do not use heavy drapes on the windows
  • Choose lighter colours for your living room. Dark colours absorb light and heat up the room.
  • Ensure that your furniture is not blocking the light coming from door or windows
  • Place the mirrors in strategic locations so that natural light is reflected naturally

The pandemic might have certainly pushed us towards the darker side of living at home, but it is up to us to brighten up our spaces the way we want. Living a healthy life without stepping out for months is a challenge indeed and we are prepared to take it up head-on.
