While living in cities has its perks, it often also means living in compact homes. One of the major killjoys of living in metros is the space, or its lack thereof. Compact spaces, which are cluttered and unorganised, also result in anxiety and can, in many ways, be a hurdle in your ways to rewind and de-stress. The very purpose of your home is to make you feel relaxed, organised and at peace. Here are a few tips and tricks to maximise space in your home by the build and design experts.
While we do a very good job of filling up our homes with furniture and organisers, very few tend to look up to the space in their homes, quite literally! The best way to free up space on your floor is to stack up things and use up space vertically to store things. Invest in vertical storage shelves and drawer organisers for storage and make the most of your space.
While there are many ways to trick the mind into thinking a space is bigger than it is, lighting is the best tool at your disposal. An old trick is to use light, bright colours for your walls and curtains to allow plenty of natural light to play into your home. This can make a space appear larger than it is. With lights and illusions, you can brighten up a room and also add height to it. Placing lighting fixtures high up in the room in the form of wall sconces, overhead lighting, and taller lamps take the focus off the actual width of the room.
Your kitchen and bedroom are the most utilised spaces in your home. These spaces must therefore be functional, comfortable, and among the airiest ones in your home. Make the best use of your modular kitchen amenities to store dry goods and food storage containers. Clear your countertops of the pots and pans. Your kitchen is where you can maximise the use of overhead storage.
At the same time, if you’re looking to maximise space in your bedroom, get rid of your bulky dressers and armoires with curves. Invest in slim, sleek pieces that add aesthetics to your room. Alternatively, amp up your storage options with a trundle bed or storage drawers under your regular bed to make the most of the space underneath.
Simply put, go the Marie Kondo way! Clutter is the biggest constricting force when it comes to space. Throw away anything and everything that you no longer need or use. Let minimalism be your guiding principle. At the same time, reorganise your home with the objects you need according to their purpose. If the gym equipment can be moved around to your terrace garden, do it.
If big dining tables or workstations occupy your floor space, it’s probably time to replace them. An L-shaped desk in the corner of the room works best as your WFH station. It also gives you two different work surfaces without taking up much space. Wall-folding tables and mounted furniture are another way to go. They’re handy to use when required and amp up your walls when not in use.
If you’re looking to revamp your home this season, you now know exactly what to do. Implementing these easy tips and tricks can dazzle up your space and give it the cosy, luxurious feel we all love. Plus, it’s easy on your pockets. Now that’s a bonus.
